The Cranbury digital Camera Club Newsletter - February 2006

The CdCC held its second meeting on the 2nd Wednesday of February. It was well attended by enthusiastic photographers from all walks of life. By the end of the evening 15 people were signed up as members of this new club. Started by Janet Paxton and Greg DeAngelis of Cranbury with help and support from their respective spouses, the club aims to provide a fun and non threatening learning environment for all photographers at any level of experience. We will be a non profit organization with the membership paying annual dues to offset the costs of speakers and judges as well as other expenses.

Every month we will have an experienced speaker present a topic related to digital photography. This month's speaker came from Pennsylvania to teach us "How to Mat your Photograph for Competition". Carla Klouda, a part time professional photographer who has many awards for her wonderful photography, gave an enlightening talk about the methods of matting photos and explained how any one can do this. Comments made by a new member included the fact that he thought it was impossible to do this himself but now he had learnt the secrets he would give it a try. You can see Carla's work at www.kloudaphoto.com

The next meeting, Wednesday February 22nd will be a competition. We will have these monthly through the year as it has been shown that this is one of the most effective ways to improve your photographic skills with regard to composition, exposure and content of the shot. A judge will be able to give a totally unbiased opinion of each photograph as he is shown every one anonymously in front of the group. He/she will give an opinion that is heard by everyone. This is the only way to get the real truth about your work although we have to bear in mind that all judges look for something different. It is not only about winning or even your photo but more about learning from others mistakes and creativeness too. There will be a theme for every month's competition and you must be a member to enter.....except for this first one. This month the theme will be open, that is you can put in any of your photos but if they have an Ice or Winter theme to them that would be better. Think "my favorite winter picture" and it will be okay to enter it. The smallest size print accepted will be 10 by 8 inches and the largest size print 16 x 20. These should be matted, preferably white, to abide by PSA standards, to no more than 18 x 24 inches.

We hope to be able to impart to every member attending each meeting at least a small nugget of information that will help advance and improve not only their photography skills but also their enjoyment of the process. To this end we will be having at every meeting the soon to be famous "tips" section. There will be a Camera and a Photoshop tip announced at the beginning and end of each meeting so please plan to be on time (7:30pm sharp) to get the first and stay to the end (between 9:00 and 9:30pm) to benefit from both.

We meet at the Gourgaud Gallery in Cranbury Town Hall, 23 N Main Street Cranbury, on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at 7:30pm sharp. We look forward to seeing you there.
