The Cranbury digital Camera Club Newsletter - March 2006

The CdCC held its fourth meeting on the 2nd Wednesday of March. It was our largest meeting yet with 17 enthusiastic photographers from all walks of life. By the end of the evening more people were signed up as members of this new club. Current membership now stands at 31 including our youth and family members.  Started by Janet Paxton and Greg DeAngelis of Cranbury with help and support from their respective spouses, the club aims to provide a fun and non threatening learning environment for all photographers at any level of experience. We will be a non profit organization with the membership paying annual dues to offset the costs of speakers and judges as well as other expenses.

On Wednesday, February 22nd, the club held its first club competition with the theme of “Ice”.  Congratulations to Dan Goldberg for his First Place photograph of “Sweet Gum Balls in Ice” and to our other winners, Fritz Hager and Neville Walters.  Janet and Greg also had winning images. The results section of the web site lists all the photographs entered and how they placed.  For this initial competition, everyone was placed into one class level which we will continue to do until the number of entries warrants us dividing into categories. If any of our youth members enter images they will always have their own category.  The judges that are invited for the competitions to critique and rank the photos all have an expertise in some form of photography. Our aim is to use experienced judges that are not members of our club so there is more impartiality.  The judge for this competition was Chris Stadelmeyer. Chris is an art major who has studied art and photography and is herself an accomplished, award winning photographer. She has taught photography for many years and is now working with fabric design using graphic photography as a base.

At the first meeting of each month (the 2nd Wednesday) we will have an experienced speaker present a topic related to digital photography.  Our speaker on March 8th came from New York Camera, a specialist camera  store on Nassau Street  in Princeton. Brian gave us a superb presentation on “The Basics: How to Use Your Digital Camera” using a digital point and shoot camera connected to a TV screen that we could all see for demonstration purposes. A lively question and answer session followed the talk.  Brian Asack and his father, Lou, own and manage New York Camera and Brian prides himself on the lessons he gives to all who buy camera equipment from them. Please stop by the store, mention CdCC and see what they have to offer. Their prices are very competitive and are usually the same or cheaper than B&H in New York and local mega stores. We thank Brian for generously donating his time to us.

The next meeting, Wednesday March 22nd will be another competition. We will have these monthly through the year as it has been shown that this is one of the most effective ways to improve your photographic skills with regard to composition, exposure and content of the shot. An outside judge will be able to give a totally unbiased opinion of each photograph as he is shown every one anonymously in front of the group. He/she will give an opinion that is heard by everyone. This is the only way to get the real truth about your work although we have to bear in mind that all judges have their own favorite topics and it is very subjective. It is not only about winning or even your image but more about learning from others’ creativeness and their mistakes too. There will be a theme for every month's competition and this month, the theme will be “Wild Birds”. Normally, our by-laws state that you must be a member to enter prints into the competition but while our membership is still growing we are relaxing that rule for this month.  So…..Fill the bird feeder, head to the lake, go the park or just be innovative in trying to get that elusive wild bird photo.  This month’s judge will be Victor Richie.  Victor is an avid digital wildlife photographer from Pennsylvania.  Not only will he judge our images but he will also talk about the art of wildlife photography.  So remember to have fun trying to fulfill each month’s topic.  These topics are meant to stretch your photographic knowledge and skills.   The smallest size print accepted will be 10 inches by 8 inches and the largest size print 16 inches x 20 inches. These should be matted, preferably with white matte, to no more than 18 inches x 24 inches to abide by PSA standards.

We hope to be able to impart to every member attending each meeting at least a small nugget of information that will help advance and improve not only their photography skills but also their enjoyment of the process. To this end we will be having at every meeting the soon to be famous "tips" section. There will be a Camera and a Photoshop tip announced at the beginning and end of each meeting so please plan to be on time (7:30pm sharp) to get the first and stay to the end (between 9:00 and 9:30pm) to benefit from both.

We meet at the Gourgaud Gallery in Cranbury Town Hall, 23 N Main Street Cranbury, on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at 7:30pm sharp. We look forward to seeing you there.
